York Art Gallery’s collection of paintings spans more than 600 years and works range from 14th century Italian panels and 17th century Dutch masterpieces to Victorian narrative paintings and 20th century works by LS Lowry and David Hockney. The building opened its doors to the public in 1879 for the second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition, inspired by the Great Exhibition in London of 1851. In 1892 it became the City Art Gallery.
York Art Gallery underwent a two-year major redevelopment project, reopening to visitors on 1 August 2015. The gallery now has three exhibition spaces on the ground floor and four on the first floor, a new entrance at the rear of the building, improvements to the cafe and disabled access, two shops, and an Artists’ Garden.
The redevelopment included the creation of a new Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA). Housed in two beautiful new gallery spaces on the first floor, CoCA showcases the gallery’s internationally significant collection of British Studio Ceramics.
